The conversation turned to the debate of colored tattoos versus black ones, and Mel was more than happy to change the focus from her to a more general subject.
Two hours later, Mel was back in her shop, checking her supplies, disinfecting all her stations again, because she was a fanatic about cleanliness and would rather do the surfaces twice than miss it once.
Satisfied that sheâd hit it all and could get home to spend some time with Lex, Mel was about to turn off the lights when her cell phone rang. Wondering if perhaps sheâd left something at Stefâs, she was smiling as she pulled out the phone, but it disappeared when she saw her damn number again.
âCut it out already,â she muttered, jabbing at the decline symbol, before deleting the call from her recent call list. âGo fishing or something.â
Sheezâ¦the damn kid was persistent. Or whoever it was.
âGet a life,â she grumbled under her breath and flicked off the lights.
Willing the caller to leave her the hell alone already, she exited the shop, locked the doorâtugged on it to be sure she locked itâthen strode toward the alley, eager to get home.
This caller was starting to piss her off. She was really close to telling Gabe and getting the sheriff involved.
She sighed. But dammit, she didnât have time for the red tape.
âEverything okay?â Carter asked, getting out of his truck parked inside his building, and as it had all damn day, her insides heated at the sight of him.
The man looked good enough to eat. His worn jeans had creases in some delectable places, and his Army T-shirt stretched across his well-defined chest, making her mouth water.
She swallowed hard, hoping he hadnât noticed. âYes. Thanks. Just stopped in to clean the stations,â she said, walking in his direction to get to the alley that separated their buildings.
âNo need to thank me,â he said, slipping the truck keys in his front pocket.
Mel tried, she really did, but couldnât stop her mind from getting a little naughty, wondering what his keys settled against. Then her body got a lot hot.
âEarth to Mel.â He stopped in front of her and dipped down to meet her gaze. âWhere were you just then?â
Snorting, she leaned against the wall of her building for support. Technically, it was the outside of Stefâs shop, but Mel didnât think her friend would mind. âI was somewhere I shouldnât be.â
Damn. The admission slipped out before she could stop it.
Heat entered Carterâs eyes, and heaven help her, he palmed the wall near her head and leaned in. She tried to swallow, but her throat was suddenly dry and there was nothing to swallowâ¦except maybe her tongue.
Lifting his other hand, he twisted a strand of her hair around his finger, all while holding her gaze. âCare to share?â
